The National Examination Council (NECO) has introduced a new measure to prevent examination malpractice.
NECO’s spokesman, Azeez Sani, announced that the council will now emboss candidates’ photographs and dates of birth on their original certificates.
This decision was made in response to NECO’s observation that proxy enrollment often results in identity theft and fake results. Determined to eradicate all forms of examination malpractice, NECO has implemented measures to check impersonation in all its examinations.
To achieve this, NECO will utilize biometric data capture devices to verify candidates’ identities, use customized answer booklets, and emboss candidates’ photographs and dates of birth on original certificates.
”Some of the measures include the use of a biometric data capture device, the use of customised answer booklets, and the embossing of the photograph and date of birth of candidates on the original certificates,” he said.
Mr Sani also said the NECO e-verify, an online platform for confirmation/verification of results, was unveiled in 2023 to reduce these infractions.

He urged members of the public to note that any certificate purported to have been issued by the council and which could not be verified or authenticated using the NECO e-verify platform was fake.
”The council, therefore, calls on state ministries of education and other school owners to ensure that only personal details of genuine candidates are used for registration in all NECO-conducted examinations,” he stated.
Mr Sani further explained that candidates found culpable of impersonation in the just-released 2024 Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) internal had their results withheld.
He said this measure was part of the council’s robust policy to check all forms of examination malpractice.
