India Rules Lagos Badminton Classics

India has emerged champion of the 3rd Lagos International Badminton Classics.

India at the conclusion of the tournament won the competition with a total of two gold, two silver and two bronze medals.

Sir Lanka finished second with two gold while Israel came third with one gold and one bronze.

Host Nigeria finished in fourth place with two silver and two bronze medals while Portugal won a silver to finish fifth.

Others countries that won medals are Egypt, Ghana and Uganda.

The emergency of India as winner came courtesy of her performance in the men’s single and men’s double where she amassed two gold and complemented it with wins in the men’s single and women’s single.

Speaking on the tournament, the president of the Badminton Federation of Nigeria, Barr. Francis Orbih , said that the standard of play was high, and the Nigeria athletes did their best considering that they are not as exposed as other athletes from other countries and that the federation will do its best to keep them busy.

“The standard of play is high and our players have had the opportunity of playing against some of the best players in the world. With their various performances in this competition, they will improve in the world rankings.

The federation will continue to ensure that they keep getting busy to enable them to develop into world beaters.

We have seen what they are capable of doing against the best in the world and we will encourage them to get better with each competition they attend. They recently returned from a continental competition before the Classics began and now they have put up a good fight and I hope we can learn from here going forward.”

Speaking in similar vein, the winner of the men’s single, Achita Boina an athlete from India said he is very delighted to have won the competition even as he expressed his profound gratitude to the Badminton Federation of Nigeria.
