INEC Fixes Aug 8, 2026 For Osun Governorship Election

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has fixed August 8, 2026 for the 2026 governorship election in Osun State.

INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, announced the dates on Friday during the swearing-in ceremony of six newly appointed Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs), whose nominations were recently approved by the National Assembly.

In the schedule, Ekiti State will go to the polls on Saturday, July 20, 2026, while the Osun State governorship election is scheduled for Saturday, August 8, 2026.

He also revealed that the commission is finalising preparations for bye-elections to fill vacant seats in both the National and State Houses of Assembly.

Immediately after news of the timetable for the Osun election filtered, members of the public in Osun, especially political gladiators, took to their various social media handles to express readiness for their election.

Members of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC) in various posts took turns to boast that the election will turn in their favour.

OSUN DEFENDER gathered that in recent weeks, various aspirants have been springing up mostly from the APC, with a view to clinching the party’s ticket for the election.

Some of the aspirants include the APC National Secretary, Dr. Ajibola Basiru, Managing Director of the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA), Mr. Bola Oyebamiji, Prince Dotun Babayemi, Senator Babajide Omoworare, among others.

While the PDP has settled for incumbent Governor Ademola Adeleke as its flagbearer, the candidate of the Omoluabi Progressives tendency, backed by former Governor Rauf Aregbesola, is yet to be known.

OSUN DEFENDER learnt on Friday that with the release of the timetable for the poll, the group, which is yet a political party, will announce its next political destination, as it has consistently stated that it will not merge with any other party for the election.

Other residents of the state who spoke to the medium also stated their optimism as they await unfolding political events ahead of next year’s governorship poll.
