Insecurity: Group Urges Adeleke To Be Proactive, Secure Osun Borders, Forests
- As Terrorists Kill Five Vigilantes, Abduct Residents In Kwara Community
A civil society group, the Center for Social Justice and Public Protection (CSJPP), has urged Governor Ademola Adeleke to take proactive measures and ensure the insecurity ravaging neighbouring Kwara State does not cascade into Osun State.
The group made the call following the latest attack by bandits on security personnel and residents of Kwara on Sunday morning.
The bandits had attacked the forest guards and surrounding areas of Oke Ode, killing about 10 members of the security outfit and abducting others.
The incident was confirmed by the Kwara State Governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, who called for increased security deployments to the state to rout the criminals involved in attacks in parts of the state.
“My heartfelt condolences go to the families. No word can adequately capture the depth of my sadness and nothing can compensate the bereaved families over these incidents, in spite of our efforts and the investments in enlisting and training the forest guards to bolster the conventional forces. Our people are understandably concerned about the situation, and I wholeheartedly share in this grief,” the Governor said in the statement on Sunday.
“While we appreciate the efforts and unquantifiable sacrifices of the security forces as well as the successes so far, we definitely need to do a lot more until we are completely out of the woods.
“Finally, I urge our brave residents to remain calm and avoid the temptation to turn on ourselves. I equally commend all the forest guards and the local hunters who, though lost five of their compatriots, equally neutralised several of the attackers. We will forever be grateful to all of them as our heroes.”
CSJPP coordinator, Akin Akanji, in a statement sent to OSUN DEFENDER on Sunday, urged Governor Adeleke to ensure that all Osun borders, as well as the forest linking the state with Kwara, are adequately secured.
“What is happening in Kwara State is an eye-opener and we must ensure that the insecurity in the state does not cascade into Osun State.
“As a group, we sympathise with the victims of these barbaric killings and urge the federal government to find a lasting solution to the insecurity challenges facing the country, particularly the Northern part of Nigeria.
“We are also appealing to Governor Ademola Adeleke to ensure that our borders and forests are fully secured to guide against these evil people entering Osun.
“We also urged stakeholders in the state to support the governor in this irrespective of political affiliations. The time for work is now, and we should not play politics with the lives and property of the Osun people. We pray Osun State will continue to be peaceful,” the statement read in part.
