The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has asked the national assembly to summon President Muhammadu Buhari to answer questions on how the present administration intends to tackle insecurity.
Nigeria has seen a recent spike in the activities of bandits who have targeted communities, schools, security facilities, among others.
The attack on the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) in Kaduna, resulted in the death of two officers, while another officer was abducted.
PDP made the admonition through the party spokesperson, Kola Ologbondiyan, during a media briefing on Wednesday, in Abuja.
PDP said Buhari has not “demonstrated any capacity to protect lives and property”.
The opposition party said the president has only paid lip service to issues of insecurity, adding that the Buhari administration has failed to implement a blueprint the PDP provided on addressing insecurity.
According to him, “What we are getting is lip service to the issue of internal security. As a result, the PDP, you may recall, in this same hall provided a blueprint for the purposes of direction for the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari. But like I like said, the commander-in-chief has not been able to implement any of the recommendations put forward by the Peoples Democratic Party,” he said.
“We cannot continue this way. We cannot continue to put our hope on nothing — in a situation where our children cannot go to school; in a situation that farmers cannot go to their farmlands. Already, we are witnessing a rise in the cost of food items, and how Nigerians, on a daily basis, are going hungry.
“We hereby, as a party, call on the national assembly to cautiously assess. They should return to plenary and apply their drastic legislative instruments by summoning President Muhammadu Buhari to the national assembly in an open session to come and tell Nigerians why our nation has fared this worse, and why the security apparatus of our country has totally collapsed in the hands of President Muhammadu Buhari.”
The PDP also asked the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) and all stakeholders to “wake up and take a stand to rescue our country”.
