Oyo State Commissioner of Police, Mr Ayodele Sonubi, on Wednesday, waded into the faceoff between the Soun of Ogbomoso, Oba Afolabi Olaoye and the embattled Chief Imam of the town, Sheikh Taliat Ayilara.
The move was to broker peace between the monarch and the chief imam.
The reconciliation meeting which took place in Ogbomoso, according to reports was summoned to calm the frayed nerves of the two sides.
OSUN DEFENDER recalls there has been a strained relationship between the two for the past few weeks, which has attracted external attention.
Multiple sources privy to the peace parley disclosed that fake news and hate speeches mostly on social media had worsened the crisis.
One of the sources said: “The two parties bore their minds and the meeting was quite revealing and the outcome fruitful. Oba Ghandi had started taking the Imam as a son when some aggrieved Muslim leaders started poisoning the Kabiyesi’s mind against imam.”
“Many things were known for the first time by the monarch and the Imam today that were shockingly untrue. At last, the two parties are ready to embrace peace.
“It’s quite disturbing to know that Muslims, particularly prominent Muslims and scholars were the ones interested in the removal of Imam and not the Oba Ghandi himself.”
Another source said: “If you listened to the Kabiyesi, he wasn’t interested in removing Imam. The Muslim leaders may meet with the Kabiyesi very soon and normalcy will be restored. There is no point mentioning or showing faces of those behind the removal of Imam.
“There is a need to make peace with everybody. The Imam has a lot to do and he has given assurances that he will normalize relationships with the king and everybody in Ogbomoso.”
Recall that the Soun-in-council in a letter to the Chief Imam, advised him to step aside following a report of a committee set up by the monarch to investigate the claim by some Ayilara Descendants who said the Chief Imam was not from the Ayilara family. This allegation was dismissed by the Chief Imam.
