Inter Milan Monitor January Move for Fulham’s Bassey
Inter Milan are reportedly monitoring a possible January move for Fulham defender Calvin Bassey, with the Nigeria international attracting growing interest from Serie A.
The Italian giants are said to have placed Bassey on their radar as they seek to reinforce their defence, with a left-footed central defender among their priorities, alongside plans to strengthen at right wing-back.
According to TEAMtalk, Inter and several other Serie A clubs are closely tracking the 26-year-old’s situation during the ongoing transfer window. However, Fulham are understood to be unwilling to allow the former Rangers defender leave midway through the season, describing him as a key figure in their defensive setup.
TEAMtalk reported that sources at Fulham have stressed that the club has no intention of sanctioning a January exit, insisting that Bassey remains central to their long-term plans at Craven Cottage.
Inter’s interest is believed to be driven by the need for defensive depth as they contend with domestic and European commitments. The report noted that the Nerazzurri are keen to bolster their squad amid a congested schedule that includes a tight Serie A title race and Champions League demands.
Other Italian clubs are also said to be monitoring Bassey’s situation, drawn by his Premier League experience and international pedigree with Nigeria.
Bassey is currently on international duty with the Super Eagles at the Africa Cup of Nations, where Nigeria faced Algeria in the quarter-finals on Saturday.
Fulham signed the defender from Ajax in the summer of 2023 for €22.5m, a year after the Dutch club had acquired him from Rangers for a similar fee. He made an immediate impact in west London, winning Fulham’s Player of the Year award last season and further boosting his reputation across Europe.
Comfortable at centre-back and capable of operating at left-back, Bassey’s composure on the ball and physical presence have been vital to Marco Silva’s side during the current Premier League campaign.
Despite the interest, any potential transfer is considered unlikely before the end of the season. TEAMtalk reported that a move is more probable in the summer, with Fulham reluctant to weaken their squad as they push for European qualification.
Bassey is under contract with Fulham until 2027, with the club holding an option to extend by a further year, strengthening their position in any future negotiations.
