Iran’s judiciary on Saturday announced the arrest of 20 people accused of working for Israel’s Mossad spy agency in recent months, warning they would face no leniency and be made an example.

The announcement comes days after Iran executed Rouzbeh Vadi, a nuclear scientist convicted of spying for Israel and providing information on another scientist killed in Israeli air strikes in June.

Judiciary spokesperson Asghar Jahangiri said some suspects had been cleared of charges and released but did not specify how many.

He stressed that the judiciary would issue firm rulings against agents of the “Zionist regime” and release more details once investigations are concluded.

This year, Iran has significantly increased executions of those found guilty of spying for Israel, with at least eight carried out recently.

In June, Israel launched 12 days of air strikes on Iran, targeting senior generals, nuclear scientists, key facilities and residential areas. Iran retaliated with missile and drone strikes on Israel.

Rights group HRANA reported that the Israeli attacks killed 1,190 people in Iran, including 436 civilians and 435 security personnel. Israel said 28 people died in Iran during its retaliatory strikes.
