Iran Declares U.S. Nuclear Talks Futile After Israeli Strike
Iran has dismissed nuclear negotiations with the United States as “meaningless” following Israel’s military attack on Iranian territory.
The talks, intended to curb Iran’s nuclear activities, are now in jeopardy after Israel launched airstrikes on Iranian missile and nuclear sites on Friday, prompting retaliatory missile attacks on Tel Aviv and Jerusalem.
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei said on Saturday that the U.S. could not be trusted as a neutral mediator, accusing it of enabling the Israeli offensive.
“The other side acted in a way that makes dialogue meaningless. You cannot claim to negotiate and at the same time allow the Zionist regime to target Iran’s territory,” he told state media.
Tehran insists that Israel could not have carried out the attack without American approval, stating that the U.S. had effectively undermined diplomatic efforts.
Baghaei added, “The Israeli regime could not have acted without U.S. backing,” blaming Washington for derailing the peace process.
Despite Iran’s allegations, the United States has denied involvement in the assault and called for continued dialogue. A U.S. representative at the United Nations said Iran would be “wise” to stay committed to the negotiation path.
However, the future of the sixth round of talks, scheduled for Sunday in Muscat, now hangs in the balance.
“It is still unclear what decision we will make on Sunday in this regard,” Baghaei said.
Iran maintains that its nuclear programme is for peaceful, civilian purposes and has repeatedly rejected claims that it is pursuing nuclear weapons.
Meanwhile, U.S. President Donald Trump told Reuters that his administration had prior knowledge of the Israeli strike but believes diplomacy is still possible.
