THE Police have arraigned an Islamic preacher, Yahya Gambari, before an Osogbo magistrate’s court, on the allegation of defamation of character.
20-year-old Yahya was arraigned, alongside one AbdulMutahaly Ismail, before the court on a four-count charge bordering on conspiracy, breach of peace and defamation of character.
The duo was accused of posting defamatory comments on the social media against one Engineer Azeez Ibrahim and his family.
Both Yahya and Ismail were said to have accused the plaintiff and his family of planning to eliminate them through the help of hired killers.
According to the charge sheet obtained by OSUN DEFENDER yesterday, the defendants and others at large committed the offence sometimes in the month of September 2021 in Osogbo.
The alleged offence contravened Section 24(2) of the Cybercrime Act, Laws of Federation of Nigeria 2015 and Sections 514, 375 and 249 of the Criminal Code, Cap 34, Vol. II, Laws of Osun State, 2002.
But the accused persons pleaded not guilty to the allegations against them.
Defence counsel, Ashim Abioye, prayed the court to admit the defendants to bail on a liberal term, noting that they were ready to stand trial and provide reliable sureties.
The Magistrate, Dr. Olusegun Ayilara, admitted the accused persons to bail in the sum of N500,000 with one surety each.
The case was adjourned till October 29, 2021.
