I’ve No Interest in Debate with Trump — Pope Leo XIV
Pope Leo XIV has expressed regret that his recent remarks were interpreted as a response to criticism from United States President Donald Trump, insisting he has no interest in engaging in any debate with the American leader.
He made the clarification on Saturday while speaking with journalists as he travelled to Angola on the second leg of his African tour.
He explained that a speech he delivered in Cameroon, where he spoke about “tyrants” ransacking the world, had been prepared long before Trump’s comments.
The Pope said the remarks were wrongly seen as a reaction after Trump stated that he was “not a big fan” of the American pontiff.
He stressed that the suggestion he was attempting to open a fresh dispute with the US president was inaccurate.
Pope Leo XIV added that he had no interest whatsoever in entering into a new exchange or political debate with Donald Trump.
