June 12: “Democracy Is The Best Form Of Government” – Saka-Layonu Tells Nigerians
As the nation commemorate June 12, an aspirant in the forthcoming gubernatorial election in Osun state, Dr. Ismail Abiodun Saka-Layonu has described democracy as the best type of government globally.
Ismail Saka-Layonu (SAN) who is aspiring to run under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) revealed in Osogbo on Tuesday that the events, controversies and history surrounding the June 12, 1993 election which is till today described as the best in Nigeria’s history doubles as the nation’s political turning point.
He pointed out that the tragedy and atrocities that followed it, especially its annulment, gross abuse of human rights by military administrators as well as the death of the assumed winner, Bashorun MKO Abiola remains an indicator that democracy is the best form of government.
The legal expert who explained that the country’s experience and achievements since 1999 of its uninterrupted democracy came as the fruit of the sacrifice made by MKO, especially the greatest price of death he paid.
Dr. Abiodun appreciated President Muhammadu Buhari for recognizing June 12 as Nigeria’s democracy day instead of the previous May 29 and the conferment of the GCFR national award on Abiola, adding that the action has further defined the president as a believer in democracy.
He listed strict adherence to the rule of law, recognition of human rights and periodic elections as the elements that stands democracy out.
The Senior Advocate of Nigeria urged Nigerians to embrace the true practice of democracy, adding that it is incomparable with any other form of government.
