June 12: Osun Students Join Pro-Democracy Procession, Demand Good Governance

Students of tertiary institutions in Osun State during the ‘Democracy Day’ procession in Osogbo, the Osun State capital, on Wednesday, lamented the severe hardship and hunger bewildering Nigerians, under the leadership of President Bola Tinubu.

The Public Relations Officer of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Southwest, Zone D, Comrade Bamigboye Peter, during an interview with Osun Defender, stated that the government of the day has disappointed Nigerians, and has dashed the hopes of the people.

Peter further asserted that, “We are out today to commemorate June 12, which is a day to acknowledge and celebrate democracy in Nigeria, but unfortunately, Nigerians cannot get the dividend of democracy, which includes inclusiveness, accountability, social amenities, free press, security of lives and properties, access to education.”

“We are using this medium to restate that we are not in alignment with the Nigerian Federal government’s fraudulent student loan, and we reject it in its entirety. Rather, we want access to affordable education.”

Another student leader who was present at the Democracy Day procession, Comrade Olans stated that the removal of fuel subsidy by the government was insensitive, unreasonable, and oppressive.

He also said “It was easy for them to remove fuel subsidy, but they are yet to minimize salaries, allowances of legislators, the President and his cabinet members, and we daily see how misappropriation of public fund and embezzlement is draining our economy. Today, we demand true democracy that considers the people in its policies.”
