Justice Is Not for Sale — Tinubu Warns Judges

President Bola Tinubu on Monday urged Nigeria’s judiciary to maintain integrity and fairness, insisting that justice should never be bought or sold.

He expressed concern over delays in resolving cases and limited access to justice, calling for a more efficient and reliable court system.

Speaking at the 2025 All Nigerian Judges Conference in Abuja, themed “Building a Confident Judiciary,” Tinubu stressed that public trust is the foundation of the judiciary’s authority.

He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to supporting the judicial system, tackling misconduct, and enhancing its capacity, noting that this responsibility is shared by all judicial officers, not just the National Judicial Council.

Tinubu warned that even legally sound judgments lose credibility if perceived as unjust.

He urged reforms to strengthen public confidence, emphasising that the judiciary serves the people, not the Bench or Bar.

He also highlighted the importance of collaboration among the Executive, Legislature, and Judiciary, describing a principled and efficient judiciary as essential for democracy and national growth.

The President promised practical support, including modern infrastructure, digital case management systems, and fully equipped courtrooms to improve transparency and speed in legal proceedings.

He also underscored judicial welfare, training, and independence, pledging continued support for the National Judicial Institute’s professional development programmes.

Cautioning against corruption, Tinubu said compromises in the judiciary undermine governance and democracy.

He called on judges to confront challenges such as case backlogs, discipline, accessibility, and affordability of justice with courage and practicality, especially for vulnerable citizens.

Concluding, he described judges as “guardians of Nigeria’s moral conscience,” urging them to deliver fair and bold rulings that uphold democracy while assuring them of continued government support in carrying out their responsibilities.
