Hundreds of passengers were stranded on Monday morning after an Abuja-bound train from Kaduna collided with another train along the rail corridor, forcing an immediate suspension of operations.

The incident occurred during the peak early morning commute, raising urgent questions about safety protocols and the Digital Signaling System on Nigeria’s busiest rail route.

Passengers on board reported that the train departed Kaduna as scheduled but later encountered a stationary or oncoming train along the track.

The impact, described by witnesses as a “sudden and violent jolt,” brought both engines to a halt.

“We were moving at a steady pace when there was a loud bang and the train suddenly braked,” one passenger said via social media. “We later realised we had hit another train on the same track. Everyone is shaken, but we are waiting for official word.”

Another passenger, Sada Malumfashi, added: “Just dropped from the Kaduna-Abuja train. We heard a loud bang and the train jolted to a stop, flinging people across. Passengers got hit and most are bleeding and severely injured.”

Reports indicate that the train was delayed for about 30 minutes before resuming to Kubwa, with passengers complaining of little to no communication from the Nigerian Railway Corporation (@info_NRC).

While no fatalities have been confirmed, preliminary reports suggest significant damage to the train heads.

Emergency response teams and security personnel have been deployed to evacuate passengers and secure the area.
