Kano Declares Monday Public Holiday To Mourn 22 Athletes Killed In Road Crash

Kano State has announced Monday as a public holiday to mourn the 22 athletes who died in a road accident while returning from the National Sports Festival.

The tragedy happened when the team’s bus overturned at the Dakatsalle Bridge in Kura Local Government Area. Several others were injured in the crash.

Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, media aide to Governor Abba Yusuf, made the announcement on Sunday.

Governor Yusuf, who is currently on Hajj in Saudi Arabia, sent his condolences to the bereaved families and pledged support.

“On behalf of the government and the good people of Kano State, we wish to extend our heartfelt condolences over the unfortunate incident that occurred to the brave Kano team members on their way back home along the Kano–Zaria expressway,” the governor said.

“It is with a deeply saddened heart that I received the tragic news of the unfortunate incident which claimed the lives of 22 innocent citizens and left several others injured.

“On behalf of the government and the good people of Kano State, I extend our heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased. We mourn with you and share in your grief.”

The National Sports Festival took place in Ogun State from May 18 to 30, with Kano finishing 13th overall, winning six gold medals among their total of 29.
