Kano Hisbah Arrests Five Over Illegal Marriage Without Parental Consent
The Kano State Hisbah Board has arrested five youths for allegedly conducting an illegal marriage ceremony without parental consent.
Dr Mujahideen Aminuddeen, Deputy Commander General of the board, confirmed the arrests in a statement issued in Kano on Monday.
Those detained include the groom, the bride, and three others who acted as representatives and witnesses.
The marriage reportedly involved a dowry of ₦10,000, below the minimum amount recognised under Islamic law. Aminuddeen said the union violated both Islamic and legal marital procedures, prompting the board to launch an investigation.
Hisbah, which is responsible for enforcing Sharia law and promoting moral conduct in Kano State, regularly monitors marriages to ensure compliance with both religious and civil requirements.
The board has in the past intervened in cases where unions were contracted without proper consent or where dowry payments fell below legal thresholds.
Aminuddeen appealed to parents to closely monitor their children’s social interactions and guide them in matters relating to marriage, emphasising that early involvement can prevent legal and social complications.
