Kanu Files N100bn Defamation Suit Against Buhari’s Ex-Aide
The detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has filed a defamation suit at the Enugu High Court against Bashir Ahmad, former Special Assistant on Digital Communication to ex-President Muhammadu Buhari.
The lawsuit stems from alleged statements made by Ahmad on his X account (formerly Twitter) on January 19, 2025, where he reportedly labeled Kanu a terrorist and accused his supporters of being enemies of the country.
Through his lead counsel, Aloy Ejimakor, Kanu is seeking a declaration that Ahmad’s statements, which were also republished on platforms such as Talkofnaija.com and Phoenix-Browser.com, are defamatory.
Kanu claims the remarks portray him as a convicted terrorist and have caused significant damage to his reputation, integrity, and standing in the community.
Among other demands, the plaintiff is asking the court for an order compelling Ahmad to retract the defamatory publication across all platforms, including his X account and the websites where the statement was republished.
He also demands an unreserved apology published in newspapers.

Additionally, Kanu seeks a claim of ₦100 billion in general and exemplary damages for the harm caused and a perpetual injunction restraining Ahmad from making further defamatory statements against him.
In a related development, Bashir Ahmad has criticised Peter Obi, the former Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate, for not addressing or condemning the killing of an Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) operative, Halisu Sahabi, during a raid in Awka, the capital of Anambra State.
In a post on his verified X account yesterday, Ahmad wrote, “I expected Peter Obi to surprise us by extending his condolences to the EFCC and the family of Aminu Sahabi, who was brutally murdered, while carrying out his official duties, by a suspected internet fraudster, Joshua Chukwubueze Ikechukwu.”
Ahmad stated that Obi, under whose watch Anambra State witnessed the incident, should have strongly condemned the killing of the anti-graft operative.
