The family of IPOB leader Mazi Nnamdi Kanu has cleared human rights activist Omoyele Sowore of any involvement in the arrest of Kanu’s younger brother, Prince Emmanuel Kanu, and his lawyer, Barr. Aloy Ejimakor, during Monday’s #FreeNnamdiKanuNow protest in Abuja.

Speaking through Kanunta Kanu, the family dismissed claims that Sowore played a role in the detentions, calling the allegations “mischievously incorrect.”

They accused some South East political figures of spreading false narratives out of embarrassment that “a non-Igbo had the courage to act where they failed.”

Kanunta urged those accusing Sowore to stop, stressing that he only mobilised Nigerians to protest against injustice.

The family also denied reports that a Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) panel examined Kanu as directed by Justice James Omotosho, describing any submitted medical report as “fabricated.”

They condemned the arrests of Emmanuel Kanu and Ejimakor, insisting the protesters acted peacefully and within their constitutional rights.

The family challenged the police to produce any court order barring the demonstration.

“The government knows it has no case against him; that’s why they are employing all manner of tactics to weaken him,” the statement said, adding that the detentions were meant to emotionally destabilise Kanu ahead of his next court appearance.

Accusing the Federal Government of supervising the continued persecution of Kanu and the Igbo nation, the family warned that the injustice was reaching a tipping point.

“It is disturbing that Nigeria’s President, the Inspector General of Police, and the judiciary are overseeing the persecution of Nnamdi Kanu and Ndigbo.

The oppressors should know that the time is fast approaching when they will no longer be able to suppress the people,” Kanunta said.
