The Alliance of Yoruba Democratic Movements (AYDM) on Thursday named Kemi Badenoch, the Leader of the British Conservative Party, and Dr. Olalekan Akinyemi, a groundbreaking Yoruba scientist in Russia, as the 2024 Yoruba Persons of the Year.

AYDM, the largest coalition of over 130 Pan-Yoruba organizations, described the duo as torchbearers who have inspired millions of Yoruba people globally through their exceptional achievements in politics and science.

The General Secretary of AYDM, Comrade Popoola Ajayi, in a statement, lauded the two honorees for their unparalleled contributions in their respective fields.

According to him, “Mrs. Kemi Badenoch and Dr. Akinyemi represent the essence of Omoluabi ethos—integrity, excellence, and selflessness. Their achievements in 2024 serve as a beacon of hope and inspiration to Yoruba people worldwide.”

Badenoch’s recognition stems from her historic rise as the first Black leader of the Conservative Party and the fourth woman to occupy the position since its establishment in 1834.

Her journey to the apex of British politics, which culminated in her election on November 2, 2024, was described by AYDM as a victory against all odds, including racial and gender biases.

Badenoch was also praised for her courage in addressing the contentious “National Question” in Nigeria, a position that resonated with the long-suffering Nigerian masses despite backlash from the ruling elite.

Similarly, Dr. Olalekan Akinyemi was honored for his groundbreaking work in cancer research in Russia. Akinyemi, an oncology intern and assistant at Bashkir State Medical University, is part of a pioneering team developing a personalized mRNA-based cancer vaccine set for release in 2025.

AYDM commended his journey from humble beginnings in Lagos to the global stage, describing him as a shining example of Yoruba excellence in science and innovation.

The awards ceremony, AYDM stated, is part of its commitment to celebrating Yoruba individuals who exemplify the spirit of excellence and resilience while contributing to the upliftment of humanity.
