Kidnapped Dr Ganiyat Popoola, Nephew Released After 10 Months In Captivity

Dr Ganiyat Popoola, a resident doctor at the National Eye Centre in Kaduna who was kidnapped in December 2023 has regained freedom from her abductors.

Findings revealed that Dr Ganiyat was released Wednesday evening alongside her nephew, Mugni Folaranmi who was also kidnapped the same day.

The mother of five who was breastfeeding her last child was kidnapped alongside her husband, a military officer and Mugni at her workplace in Kaduna.

The husband was released in March after ransom was paid in millions, motocycles and others.

The President of Nigerian Association Of Resident Doctors (NARD ) Dr. Osundara Tope Zenith confirmed the release of Dr. Ganiyat in a statement seen by Osun Defender on Wednesday evening and signed by the NARD PRO, Dr. Omoho Amobi.

According to the statement, “The President, Nigerian Association Of Resident Doctors (NARD ), Dr. Osundara Tope Zenith is filled with immense joy and relief to inform you that Dr. Ganiyat Popoola, our dear colleague and resident doctor from national eye centre Kaduna, who was kidnapped and remained in captivity for more than ten months , has been released and reunited with her family.

“We extend our heartfelt gratitude to everyone who played a role in ensuring her safe return. The unwavering support, prayers, and contributions of all members and well-wishers have been invaluable in this challenging time.

“Let us continue to support one another as we work towards a safer and more secure environment for all.”

Dr Popoola started working at the National Eye Center hospital, Kaduna, one of the biggest hospitals in the country, about six years ago.

The hospital which was located at the outskirts of Kaduna city made it easy target for kidnappers.

They were kidnapped at the Staff Quarters of the hospital and demanded for N40m ransom.
