Wide condemnations have greeted the decision of operatives of the Economic Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, to raid students’ hostels at the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife.
As of the time of filing this report, about 60 students were said to have been arrested while the anti-grant agency busted over 78 rooms in the process.
While the reason for the raid could not be immediately ascertained, it was gathered that the students were arrested by the operatives in the midnight (Wednesday morning).
While condemning the action of the EFCC in a post on X (Twitter), the students union of the university said, “We strongly condemn the recent unjust arrest and harassment of our fellow students by members of the EFCC in the odd hours of today, Nov 1st , 2023. This action is unacceptable and goes against the principles of justice and due process.
“We stand in solidarity with our peers and call for a thorough investigation into these incidents. The safety and rights of students must be protected.
“We urge everyone to engage this link by retweeting and tagging every necessary quarter.”
As at the press time, it was learnt that some students are set to protest at the EFCC office in Osogbo.
