Labour Party Gov Candidate, Running Mate, Others Resign
The Labour Party in Bayelsa State has suffered a major setback as its governorship candidate in the last election, Udengs Eradiri, and his running mate, Commodore Benjamin Nathus (retd.), announced their resignation from the party.
The duo’s decision to leave the party was followed by the defection of several local government chairmen of the Labour Party, further compounding the party’s woes in the state.
In a letter dated December 8, 2024, and addressed to the state chairman of the party in Yenagoa, Eradiri formally communicated his resignation.
Titled Letter of Withdrawal as Labour Party Member, the letter cited the need to pursue his political ambition on a platform better prepared to deliver the kind of leadership Bayelsa State deserves.
Eradiri, who was recently conferred Fellowship by the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), expressed gratitude to party members who believed in his vision for a better Bayelsa.

However, he lamented that internal intrigues and leadership challenges within the party hindered their collective progress.
“It was a great moment working together politically and traversing the nooks and crannies of the state in the quest for leadership,” Eradiri noted.
He added that his decision to leave was fully supported by his loyalists, who remain committed to his vision for transformative governance.
His running mate, Commodore Nathus, echoed similar sentiments in his resignation letter, stressing the need for a platform that is committed to propelling Bayelsa towards a brighter and more prosperous future.
Nathus thanked party members for their camaraderie and the opportunity to serve, describing the experience as enriching and transformative.
The resignations come after the pair finished third in the recently concluded governorship election in Bayelsa State. The development also highlights internal struggles within the Labour Party, which has faced a series of challenges at both state and national levels.
Speaking on his next steps, Eradiri disclosed that he is undergoing consultations with stakeholders to decide on a new political platform.
“Our next party of interest will be one that enables us to serve the people and move Bayelsa forward,” he said.
