The Lagos State House of Assembly has denied reports that 27 of its members are planning to defect from the ruling party to the Labour Party, describing the claim as false and misleading.

In a statement signed by the Chairman of the House Committee on Information, Strategy, and Security, Hon. (Otunba) Ogundipe Stephen Olukayode, the Assembly said, “This publication is entirely false, misleading, and a deliberate attempt to misinform the public.”

The Assembly clarified that the recent leadership change, which saw the removal of former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa and the election of Rt. Hon. Mojisola Lasbat Meranda, was an internal matter conducted in line with constitutional provisions.

It stated, “These events in no way suggest any intention by members to leave the party. We emphasize, without any ambiguity, that no member of the Assembly is contemplating defection.”

Dismissing the defection rumours as the work of “agents of destabilization who seek to create unnecessary tension and division within the Assembly,” the lawmakers assured party leaders and supporters of their continued loyalty.

The Assembly also urged the media to uphold journalistic ethics, stating, “We call on all media partners to uphold the ethics of journalism by verifying facts before publication and refraining from spreading unverified reports that could mislead the public.”

It further reassured that any internal disagreements would be resolved peacefully, adding, “There is no crisis that warrants any member considering defection.”
