Lagos Assembly Orders Immediate Halt to Makoko Demolitions
The Lagos State House of Assembly on Tuesday directed an immediate stop to the demolition of structures in Makoko and neighbouring waterfront communities in Yaba Local Government Area.
The decision followed a meeting between the Assembly and representatives of the affected communities at the Lateef Jakande Auditorium, Alausa, Ikeja.
Noheem Adams, Chairman of the ad hoc committee appointed by the Speaker, announced that all ministries and agencies involved in the demolitions in Makoko, Oko-Agbon, and Shogunro must suspend the exercise until further notice.
He added that residents whose properties have already been demolished would receive compensation.
“All demolitions in Makoko and its waterfront communities should stop immediately until further notice. Any task force to be constituted must involve residents and carry them along,” Adams said.
Speaking for the communities, Baale Isaac Gunmayon expressed gratitude to the Assembly for intervening.
“They invited us to explain our situation, and the House’s decision reflects our wishes. We are very happy with the way they engaged us and offered hope,” he said.
The demolition, which began in December 2025, had faced criticism from human rights groups, lawyers, and residents, many of whom were displaced.
The Lagos State Government, however, defended the exercise, saying it aimed to benefit residents of the waterfront communities.
