The Federal Government through the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) has arrested the manager of a ferry that capsized in Lagos on Monday, citing negligence and non-compliance with safety regulations.
Osun Defender had earlier reported that at least 21 passengers are feared drowned in a boat accident that occurred on Monday at Imore town in the Amuwo-Odofin Local Government Area of Lagos State.
However in a statement released on Tuesday, Mrs Sarat Braimah, the Lagos Area Manager of NIWA, disclosed that yhe arrest of the manager follows a thorough investigation by NIWA, which aims to hold responsible parties accountable and prevent similar incidents in the future.
She revealed that investigators found that the fiber boat involved in the accident strayed from its designated channel and collided with a wooden boat.

She revealed further that the captain’s obstructed vision, attributed to excessive loads on the ferry, was identified as a critical factor in the mishap.
According to Braimah, “The arrest is aimed at ensuring accountability and setting a precedence for strict adherence to waterways regulations to prevent future occurrences.”
She noted that legal actions are underway as the investigation continued.
Meanwhile, NIWA has requested the ferry manager to present the captain of the ill-fated vessel for additional questioning.
Braimah stated that the ferry, operated by Only God Ferry, did not comply with operational safety standards and proper navigation procedures.
