At least 10 persons have been rescued from the collapsed three-storey building at Alakija, emergency services said Thursday afternoon.

The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Services and the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) both confirmed the figure in separate statements.

OSUN DEFENDER earlier reported that the building caved in around 11:40 am along Old Ojo Road by Alakija Bus Stop, Satellite Town.

LASEMA said the collapsed structure was used as a shopping complex, adding that one adult male has been found dead at the scene.

It said two of the 10 survivors were rescued through joint efforts of its operatives, the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA), and CRCC Construction Company, with a heavy-duty excavator deployed to support the operation.

The agency said shop owners who had resumed business at the time of the incident might still be trapped beneath the rubble, adding that search and rescue operations remain ongoing.

In its statement, the state fire service said a distress call was received at 11:37 am, adding that it mobilised emergency responders from Ijegun-Egba Fire Station, who arrived at the scene at 11:49 am.

The service said the rescued persons sustained injuries of varying severity and have been handed over to medical personnel for treatment.

The agencies said rescue operations would continue and updates would be provided as needed.

They also appealed to the public to avoid the scene and allow emergency responders unrestricted access.

The Police, Navy, Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps, and the Nigerian Red Cross Society are also participating in the rescue operation.
