Lagos NURTW Chairman Tafa Sego Survives Assassination Attempt
Chairman of the Lagos State Council of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Alhaji Mustapha Adekunle Adio, popularly known as Tafa Sego, reportedly survived an assassination attempt on Saturday night.
The incident occurred at his residence on Gbadamosi Close, Surulere, where six armed men allegedly stormed the house in a failed bid to eliminate him.
According to union stakeholder, Prince Idowu Onikoyi, who spoke to SaharaReporters by phone on Monday, Tafa Sego is safe and in good health following the attack.
“Thank God, the Chairman escaped, and he is presently fine and healthy. The police have been briefed about the matter. The security man who was met at home and beaten by the suspected assassins has gone to the police to write his statement,” Onikoyi said.
Sources disclosed that the assailants arrived around 11pm and tied up the security guard before ransacking the house in search of the union boss.
However, Tafa Sego was not at home at the time, having gone out earlier with a few associates who had visited him during the day.
The attack caused panic in the neighbourhood, with residents expressing fear over the rising insecurity and the possibility of another assault.
Police officers from Area C Command visited the scene to inspect the property and gather evidence, including statements from the assaulted guard.
A close associate of Tafa Sego, reacting to the incident, linked the attack to his ongoing reforms within the union aimed at improving members’ welfare.
“The Chairman is deeply concerned about being targeted, especially at a time when he is pushing for reforms aimed at bettering the lives of our members. We are not backing down, and we will ensure full cooperation with the security agencies to bring the perpetrators to justice,” the associate said.
Efforts to reach Lagos Police Command spokesperson, Benjamin Hundeyin, were unsuccessful as calls to his phone went unanswered.
