The Lagos State University (LASU) has officially displaced the University of Ilorin (UNILORIN) as the most preferred tertiary institution by admission seekers, according to fresh data released by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB).

The announcement was made on Tuesday during the ongoing policy meeting on admissions in Abuja.

The annual gathering, which brings together stakeholders in the nation’s education sector, is where JAMB unveils crucial statistics and decisions guiding the admission process into Nigerian tertiary institutions.

For years, UNILORIN maintained a firm grip on the top position, largely attributed to its uninterrupted academic calendar and reputation for stability. This consistency had endeared it to thousands of Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) candidates who sought admission into Nigerian universities.

However, the latest figures revealed a shift in preference among candidates. LASU garnered the highest number of applicants for the 2024/2025 academic session, pushing the University of Lagos (UNILAG) into second place, while UNILORIN fell to third.

According to JAMB’s breakdown, UNILAG attracted a total of 58,645 applications, while UNILORIN recorded 56,758. The exact number of applicants for LASU was not disclosed in the report made public on Tuesday, but officials confirmed it exceeded all others.

JAMB Registrar, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, urged universities to continue improving their offerings and remain student-focused.

He reiterated JAMB’s commitment to ensuring a fair and transparent admission process for all qualified candidates.
