Deji Adeyanju & Partners, the law firm representing Abuja-based bolt driver Stephen Abuwatseye, has announced its decision to withdraw from the case following Abuwatseye’s public apology to House of Representatives member Alex Ikwechegh.
Osun Defender recalls that Ikwechegh had assaulted Abuwatseye in a viral incident, which had sparked national outrage.
Ikwechegh was later charged assault, abuse of power, and threats to life.
The police filed the case, and Ikwechegh was granted bail by a Chief Magistrate Court in Kuje, Abuja, with the case adjourned to November 8, 2024l, but despite the serious nature of the charges, Ikwechegh pleaded not guilty to all counts.

Osun Defender earlier reported that Abuwatseya issued a video statement on Thursday, apologizing for provoking Ikwechegh and seeking forgiveness from Nigerians, which has drawn widespread criticism.
Although, the legal team behind Abuwatseye’s case, led by prominent human rights lawyer Deji Adeyanju, released a statement that they would no longer represent the driver due to “recent developments” and to uphold the firm’s professional integrity.
The statement reads: “However, in view of recent developments and after careful consideration, we have made the decision to withdraw our legal representation in other to protect our professional integrity and maintain the highest ethical standard in the legal profession.
“We wish Mr. Stephen Abuwatseye the very best, while we assure the general public of our continuous commitment towards protecting the rights of the oppressed and indigent members of the society.”
