The lawmaker representing Olorunda State Constituency in the House of Assembly, Hon. Waseeu Adebayo has called on the recently elected parliamentarians to see their election as a call to service.
He disclosed this while speaking with OSUN DEFENDER on recent events in the state
According to him, the adoption of parliamentary system in the Local Government is aimed at reducing cost of governance, as well as cost of conducting election at the local government level.
“If the last Saturday’s election were to be organised based on the presidential system of government, more fund would have been expended and the entire process would have been caused too much tension because those contesting the seat of local government Chairmanship would be sticking their necks for the post.
“But as it is, everyone is elected as a councilor first then when they are sworn in, they would only lobby among themselves to elect a chairman, making all them equal in decision making and implementation”, he added.
The lawmaker, who is also the Chairman House Committee on Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters, urged those that emerged from the process to see it as a call to serve humanity rather than using the office for self aggrandisement.
He said the council officials should be conscious of the fact that the government adopted the system to arrest the profligacy of the presidential system in the local government in the face of dwindling economy in the country, emphasising the need for the officials to be transparent in their dealings.
“It is now left for the elected officials to spread their tentacles to all the nooks and crannies of the grassroots and ensure effective collection of tax and other rates, as well as ensure an effective local government administration.
I also urge the teeming populace to cooperate with the newly elected council officials with a view to making life better for all and sundry across the state”, he added.
