“Leadership Requires Character, Not Just Numbers” – Atiku Blasts Wike
The former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar has launched a scathing attack on the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, accusing him of political bitterness and a lack of character.
In a statement issued by Atiku’s media aide, Paul Ibe, the former presidential candidate dismissed Wike’s latest outburst over the 2023 vice-presidential selection process. The statement described Wike’s claims as “a desperate attempt to rewrite history.”
Wike’s camp, through his aide, Lere Olayinka, had claimed that the Rivers-born politician secured 13 votes from a committee set up to recommend a running mate for Atiku in the 2023 election, whereas Delta State Governor, Ifeanyi Okowa, allegedly got only two votes.
However, Atiku’s media office dismissed the claim, insisting that the final decision on a running mate is a constitutional and strategic choice, not a contest based on numerical votes.
“Assuming, but not conceding, that Wike had 13 votes and Okowa had two, one must ask: what is the worth of votes if character scores a zero?” the statement read.
It went further to emphasise that leadership is beyond numbers, stressing that temperament, dignity, and the ability to unify are key factors in governance.
“A man may boast of numbers, but if his conduct lacks grace and humility, those numbers are empty,” the statement added.
Atiku’s camp reiterated that Okowa was chosen based on intellect, composure, and statesmanship, qualities they insist Wike lacks.
The statement cited Wike’s recent public conduct, both as Rivers State governor and now as FCT Minister, as justification for why he was never the right fit for the vice-presidential slot.
The media office also took a swipe at Wike and his spokesperson over their comments during the religious seasons of Ramadan and Lent, accusing them of using faith to stir political discord.
“We urge Mr Wike and his social media spokesperson to resist the temptation to sermonise about religious piety while simultaneously fanning the flames of discord,” the statement concluded.
