League of Imams, Alfas Warn Oluwo Against Installation of Grand Mufti of Yorubaland

The League of Imams and Alfas in Yorubaland have warned Oluwo of Iwo, Oba Aburasheed Akanbi, against taking any action that will be a clear contempt of Court by going ahead with the planned installation of Grand Mufty of Yorubaland despite a subsisting order of the Court.

The President of the umbrella body for all Imams and Alfas in Yorubaland, Sheik Jamiu Kewulere drew the attention of the traditional ruler to the order of Osun High Court of Justice, restraining him from appointing or installing one Daood Molaasan or any other person whatsoever as Grand Mufty of Yorubaland.

Imam Kewulere posited that as a traditional ruler, Oluwo lacks power to install any one as an Islamic title holder be it Otun Ajanasi, Ajansi or Mufty of Iwoland.

Recall that earlier this week, Islamic clerics in the Southwest region alleged Oluwo of attempting to incite religious crisis in the region.

The clerics under the aegis of League of Imams and Alfas, Southwest, Edo and Delta states led by their President urged the Governor Gboyega Oyetola during their visit to the governor in Osogbo to instruct Oba Akanbi to stop dabbling into religious issues in the region, saying it is outside his purview as a traditional ruler.

In a statement issues in Osogbo on Friday, by the President of the umbrella body for all Imams and Alfas in Yorubaland, Sheik Kewulere drew the attention of the traditional ruler to the order of Osun High Court of Justice.

The statement reads in part, “acting contrary to this valid court order is tantamount to poking his fingers in the eyes of law.

“For the avoidance of doubt, this is the position of Law in a judgement delivered by Osun State High Court of Justice on October 11,2021 where the Court held that Oluwo lacks the power to appoint, remove or install the Otun-Ajanasi and other Islamic title holders in his domain as enshrined in Iwo Central Mosque Constitution.”

Sheik Kewulere, however, appealed to all muslims in Yorubaland to remain calm as the League is handling the matter in a constitutional way.
