LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Security, A Duty For All

Experiences have shown that insecurity has always been a major challenge during festive period, particularly, Christmas and New Year.

As we approach the period, the situation is likely not to be different this time.

It has been assumed that during festive period, many people would not be able to sleep with their two eyes closed due to one insecurity challenge or the other, particularly those who have no opportunity of having bodyguard, house guard or night guard.

The society mostly becomes scary during this period day and night, as people hardly feel free to move at their convenient time because of undue harassment.

Based on this, the security agencies must double their efforts during this period to ensure that people and their properties are well secured and protected from those who live only on violence, moreso that the 2019 general elections are approaching.

It is gratifying to hear recently from the state police command that festive period this time around would be violence free, but it is not enough to talk, but to walk the talk by deploying operatives to areas that are known to be violent-prone or better still robbery-prone.

There have been cases of policemen conniving with criminals to perpetrate evil at the detriment of the ordinary people on the street, but unfortunately many of such officers are yet to be brought to book and this to an extent has encouraged criminality.

Therefore, the security agencies should double their efforts in this regard.

Citizens must also be vigilant by ensuring that they report any suspicious movement to security agencies so that they will quickly rise to the occasion for all of us to be save in our neighbourhood.

We must all complement the efforts of the government and security agencies because, they can never be everywhere at the same time.

May God almighty safe us from the men of the underworld as we move to the festive period.
