Live In Your Localities Or Resign, Uzodinma Warns LG Chairmen

Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodinma, has ordered local government chairmen and councillors to either reside in their respective areas or resign from office.
He issued the directive during a stakeholders’ meeting held at the Imo Traditional Rulers Council Secretariat in Mbari, Owerri.
Uzodinma said rural areas can only be governed effectively if the officials live among their people, adding that insecurity would reduce drastically if they stayed in their localities and stayed connected to the grassroots.
The governor stressed that the meeting was not political but aimed at fostering collaboration with leaders from the 656 autonomous communities to find solutions to insecurity and improve health care delivery in rural areas.
“No local government administration can function properly from the city. Governance must be rooted in the local councils with constant social mobilisation,” he said.
He announced the creation of Local Government Implementation Committees to enforce decisions in areas such as security, education, health, and youth empowerment.
Traditional rulers and community leaders were also urged to defend their communities against criminal elements.
Uzodinma revealed plans to establish a health centre in every community and a general hospital in each LGA, urging residents to enrol in the Social Health Insurance Programme.
He encouraged Imo youths to embrace entrepreneurship and the dignity of labour, saying: “There must be a new thinking for a new Imo to emerge.”
