Voting has ended in most polling units in today’s governorship election in the state of Osun.
However, voters on queue as at 2pm when the official voting time ends in line with INEC guidelines will still be allowed to exercise their civic responsibility.
Like previous elections, the Osun State Governorship Election witnessed simultaneous Accreditation and Voting.
It is the 5th time a governorship election will be held in the state after Nigeria’s return to democracy in 1999.
Today’s election will be the decider for who takes over from Governor Rauf Aregbesola who bows out on November 27, 2018 after the expiration of his second term.
The contest is between 48 political parties.
However, 5 candidates and their parties stand out as the major contenders. They are; Gboyega Oyetola of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, Iyiola Omisore of the Social Democratic Party SDP, Ademola Adeleke of the Peoples Democratic Party PDP, Moshood Adeoti of the Action Democratic Party ADP and Fatai Akinbade of the African Democratic Congress ADC.

UPDATE: Adeleke Planning To Run Into Exile
The governorship candidate of the PDP, Senator Ademola Adeleke, might be on his way to the United States, immediately after the election.
Sources in his camp said he has dusted his American passport and has booked a first-class seat with a prominent airline in Lagos.
This relates to his impending arrest by the police for impersonation and examination malpractices, immediately after Saturday September 22 governorship election in Osun.
Adeleke has expressed worries to close confidants that the possibility of his arrest, detention, trial and jailing for trying to get a mercenary write Senior School Certificate Examination for him in 2017 has damaged his candidature beyond redemption. He was said to have been pained for being made the butt of jokes first for getting F9 in one subject in 1981 and for attempting to write the exam again in 2017.
The source told us that Adeleke said he thought that his reputation as a dancer would have connected him to the Youth and boosted his chance but he was surprised and shocked that most people had taken him to be irresponsible.
He expressed doubts that he would win the election in light of these developments.
He also thought that even if he won, which is a long shot, he would not have immunity and might still be arrested and jailed before being sworn in, thereby setting a bad precedent as the first governor elect or governorship candidate to be jailed after election.
He was not flattered that President Muhammadu Buhari stopped his arrest which he saw as a stunt by the president to appear to the international community as a promoter of the rule of law and respect for opposition. He is not in doubt that he would be arrested after the election, win or lose. This is why he has been careful about spending money, which might go down the drain in the end.
Some of his close aides are also not happy that he carries an American passport, instead of the Nigerian passport, the source added.
