Man Arrested for Allegedly Selling Sister’s Baby for N2m
The Lagos State Police Command has arrested a 30-year-old man for allegedly selling his one-month-old niece for N2 million.
The suspect, a resident of Igbogbo in Ikorodu, reportedly claimed he sold the baby to fund their mother’s burial.
The child’s mother alerted the police, leading to his arrest.
Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Olohundare Jimoh, has ordered the case transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Panti, for further investigation.
Speaking to the News Agency of Nigeria on Friday, the suspect admitted to the act, blaming poverty for his decision.
He said he met the woman who bought the child on Facebook and delivered the baby to Mile 2, where a man sent by the buyer collected the child and N2 million was transferred to his account.
He said he gave N500,000 to his sister and used the remainder to organise their mother’s burial.
After the funeral, his sister demanded the return of her baby, claiming he had used charms to persuade her to agree to the sale. She later reported him to the police.
The suspect added that he did not know the buyer personally, had no information about her address, and could no longer reach her by phone.
Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of SCID, Dayo Akinbisehin, told NAN that investigations were ongoing and that the suspect would be charged to court upon completion of the inquiry.
