MAN IN THE NEWS: VeryDarkMan – A Cyber Crusader Or A Digital Troublemaker?
Martins Vincent Otse known as VeryDarkMan has quickly become a polarising figure in Nigeria’s online sphere. Known for his unwavering passion for activism, the Edo-born figure has cultivated a reputation for his audacious statements and fearless approach to exposing perceived injustices. To some, he is a champion for the marginalized, while to others, he’s a cyberbully whose actions often tread into the realm of defamation.
Born and raised in Lagos, Otse holds a degree in Business Administration from the University of Lagos. Initially working as a social media marketer, he found his true calling in using online platforms to critique brands and institutions. His rise to fame began when he shared a video calling out a skincare company for allegedly selling harmful products, a move that earned him praise from many, including celebrities like Davido and Korra Obidi.
Otse’s bold activism soon led him into high-profile controversies. His most notable involvement came in September 2023 when he publicly questioned the paternity of the late Mohbad’s son, Liam, and accused the singer’s wife, Omowunmi, of involvement in his death. This claim stirred strong reactions across the nation.
In January 2024, Otse was arrested after actress Tonto Dikeh accused him of cyberbullying and harassment. Although released, he continued to face legal battles, including another arrest in March following a petition from celebrities such as Dikeh and Iyabo Ojo. In May, Otse was arraigned on charges of cyberstalking, which included claims he spread indecent and offensive material online.

Despite the legal challenges, VeryDarkMan’s influence only grew. He took aim at Pastor Jeremiah Fufeyin over his “miracle soap,” which he criticized for lacking proper NAFDAC approval. In return, Fufeyin filed a lawsuit against Otse, though he later withdrew it. Otse’s relentless pursuit of accountability also saw him accusing comedian Mr Jollof’s wife of infidelity and sparking another firestorm on social media.
More recently, VeryDarkMan became embroiled in a controversy involving the crossdresser Bobrisky, rapper Falz, and human rights lawyer Femi Falana. He released an audio recording accusing them of bribery related to Bobrisky’s legal troubles. Though Bobrisky denied the claims and demanded a retraction, the ensuing legal threats have only intensified the online debate.
With millions of followers across his social media platforms, Otse’s activism continues to generate divided opinions. Some view him as a bold advocate for justice, while others question his methods, accusing him of crossing boundaries of privacy and defamation. Even rapper Ruggedman distanced himself from Otse, criticizing his confrontational style.
As the debate over freedom of speech, responsible discourse, and online activism intensifies, VeryDarkMan remains unrepentant.
Despite facing multiple lawsuits and legal threats, he remains steadfast in his mission, unapologetically calling out those he believes are in the wrong. For Otse, the fight for what he perceives as justice is one he is willing to face, no matter the consequences.
In an Instagram video, he declared his readiness to face the legal ramifications of his activism, saying, “If they throw me in jail for six months, so be it. I’m not bothered.”
