Tragedy struck the agrarian community of Otan-Ile in Osun State on Thursday when a man identified as Tope Olajide was reportedly found dead in his home after allegedly committing suicide.

Olajide, popularly known in the neighbourhood as Meco, was discovered hanging in his room, causing panic among residents of the community.

Sources told PUNCH Online that the deceased, an auto mechanic, had a misunderstanding with his wife the previous night before the incident occurred.

According to eyewitnesses, neighbours were too terrified to enter the room where the lifeless body was sighted, prompting the immediate involvement of security agencies.

Operatives of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps were said to be the first to arrive at the scene, followed shortly by police officers.

The body was later brought down in the presence of the security personnel.

Confirming the incident on Friday, the Public Relations Officer of the NSCDC in the state, Kehinde Adeleke, said the command received a distress call from its Ilare Division around 9:27 a.m. on Thursday, alerting them to the situation.

She said preliminary findings suggested that the deceased may have taken his life, although the circumstances surrounding the act remained unclear.

“Information gathered from people living close to the deceased indicates that he had a misunderstanding with his wife on Wednesday night. People insinuated suicide; should that be taken to be true, what led to it is still hidden,” Adeleke noted.

In a message to residents, the State Commandant of the NSCDC, Igbalawole Sotiyo, urged individuals facing emotional distress to reach out to the Peace and Conflict Resolution Unit of the Corps for guidance and support.

Adeleke added, “The unit has successfully mediated and resolved numerous cases, offering support to those in need. No one should ever feel compelled to take his or her own life; every life is valuable and irreplaceable.”
