Meta To Cut 600 Jobs In AI Division After Aggressive Hiring Spree
Facebook owner Meta is set to cut 600 positions in its artificial intelligence division in an effort to streamline operations after an aggressive hiring spree, US media reported on Wednesday.
The job reductions will not affect the TBD Lab, a unit established by Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg.
The lab had rapidly expanded by hiring top researchers from rivals such as OpenAI and Apple with high-paying packages.
Instead, the cuts will focus on teams working on AI products and infrastructure, aiming to improve efficiency without derailing the company’s most ambitious projects.
According to the Wall Street Journal, many of the affected employees could be reassigned within Meta.
The New York Times described the move as an attempt to tackle “organizational bloat” following the rapid expansion of Meta’s AI programme.
Both newspapers cited a memo from Chief AI Officer Alexandr Wang, noting that the reductions will mean “fewer conversations will be required to make a decision.”
Meta has yet to respond to an AFP inquiry on the matter.
