Super Eagles captain, John Obi Mikel, has opted out of the team’s 2018 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Seychelles next month in Victoria.
Mikel only returned to action for his Chinese club, Tiajin Teda last week after missing six league games due to injury.
“We spoke together. He is just coming back from injury and he needs to push his club commitments to get back in shape,” Super Eagles head coach,” Gernot Rohr told KweseESPN.com
“After injury he needs time to get fit again.”
Rohr is expected to name his squad for the crucial clash against Seychelles billed for Victoria on September 7 on Friday.
Mikel’s absence will be another blow to the team’s quest of qualifying for Cameroon 2019 AFCON following the decision of another key member of the team, Victor Moses to retire from international football.
The Super Eagles lost their first game in the qualifiers at home 2-0 to South Africa and need to beat Seychelles to keep their hopes of making a return to Africa’s showpiece event alive after failing to qualify for the last two editions.
