Mikel “Supporting Team Nigeria From China” As Commonwealth Games Begins
Super Eagles captain Mikel Obi has sent his goodwill message to Team Nigeria ahead of the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia.
This year’s edition which officially be opened on Wednesday with a fantastic opening ceremony of stunning and amazing displays of advanced technology, history and culture at the Carrara Stadium.
The games comes to an end on April 15.
Team Nigeria will be one of 71 Commonwealth nations that will participate in Gold Coast.
Mikel, who captained Nigeria’s U-23 Eagles at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games where they won bronze (Team Nigeria’s only medal in Rio), has promised the Gold Coast contingent his full support.
“Wishing the best of luck to Team Nigeria at Gold Coast2018 Commonwealth Games. I’ll be supporting you from here in China,” Mikel tweeted on Wednesday
The sports Team Nigeria will particpate in are athletics, boxing, wrestling, table tennis, basketball, para-table tennis, power-lifting and para-athletics.
This will be Team Nigeria’s 14th appearance at the Commonwealth Games since their debut in Auckland, New Zealand in 1950.
Their best ever performance at the games was in Victoria, in Canada in 1994 where they won 11 gold, 13 silver and 13 bronze, amassing a tolal of 37 medals to place fourth in the overall medals table.
