Most Nigerian Artists Are Barely Surviving – Ayo Animashaun

Founder of the Headies Awards, Ayo Animashaun, has revealed that the majority of Nigerian artists are grappling with financial struggles, despite the entertainment industry’s growth.
In a recent interview with Teju Babyface, Animashaun stated that only a few big-name artists and record labels are truly enjoying financial success.
“A lot of artists are not making money. You say artists are making money. You can’t count ten that are really making money in Nigeria right now. No, you can’t. The big names and a few record labels—other than that, the rest are struggling,” he said.
He explained that past fame does not guarantee steady income in the present, and that revenue from local streaming platforms is far less than what artists earn internationally.
“The industry may seem big, but not many are consistent. Some have made money in the past, but are they still making money now? Streaming in Nigeria pays peanuts—just peanuts,” he said.
Animashaun noted that lesser-known artists rarely headline events, and when they do perform, the fees are often poor.
He added that many of them are only trying to maintain appearances while waiting for a major breakthrough.
“There are so many that are struggling to just, you know, look good and hope something big will happen. So yes, the industry is emerging, but you must understand your level and either switch things up, move to markets where you are better appreciated, or do something else entirely,” he advised.
