Three members of a family, a father, mother, and their young child, have died in a tragic multi-vehicle collision on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway in the early hours of Tuesday.

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) said the crash occurred at Secretariat inward Otedola Bridge, involving an Audi, a Toyota Camry, and a Toyota Corolla.

Preliminary investigations indicated that the accident was caused by a heavily loaded truck travelling at excessive speed, which rammed into one of the vehicles from behind.

The impact forced the vehicle into two others, triggering a deadly chain-reaction collision.

“The tragic accident instantly claimed the lives of three members of the same family, while two other victims sustained critical injuries,” LASTMA stated.

The truck driver reportedly fled the scene immediately after the crash, leaving the victims trapped and critically injured.

LASTMA operatives arrived promptly, coordinating rescue efforts with other emergency agencies.

Two critically injured victims were extricated from the wreckage and transported by the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS) for urgent medical attention.

The bodies of the three deceased family members, who were trapped together in one vehicle, were recovered and handed over to the Lagos State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit (SEHMU) for evacuation.

The injured survivors were taken to the Lagos State Emergency and Trauma Centre at Toll-Gate for comprehensive treatment.

Security personnel from the Isheri Olowora Police Division provided operational support during the rescue, while LASTMA cleared the accident scene to prevent further crashes.

The multi-agency response included the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), LASAMBUS, SEHMU, and the Lagos Fire and Rescue Service.

Expressing sorrow over the tragedy, LASTMA General Manager Olalekan Bakare-Oki described the loss of an entire family as “unbearable and irreplaceable.”
