NAFDAC Raises Alarm Over Substandard Insulin Syringes In Nigeria
The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has raised alarm over the illegal distribution of a falsified medical product, the Knowit Insulin Syringe 40 IU 29G x 1/2, in Nigeria.
In a statement on Monday, NAFDAC warned that the outdated 40 IU/ML insulin syringes continue to circulate despite the availability of the standardised 100 IU/ML syringes.
The agency noted that the 40 IU/ML syringe, previously used for Lente animal insulins, is no longer registered and could cause serious dosing errors for diabetic patients.
“The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) is alerting the public about the illegal circulation and marketing of the substandard and falsified Knowit Insulin Syringe 40 IU 29G x 1/2 in Nigeria.
“The Association of Community Pharmacists of Nigeria has expressed concern over the continued use of 40 IU/ML insulin syringes, despite the availability of 100 IU/ML insulin syringes.

“The 40 IU/ML insulin syringe was previously used for administering Lente animal insulins, which were available in both 40 IU/ML and 100 IU/ML. However, with the phase-out of animal insulins and the adoption of human insulins, now standardised at 100 IU/ML, the 40 IU/ML syringes are no longer applicable or registered by NAFDAC.
“The use of a 40 IU/ML syringe to administer 100 IU/ML insulin increases the risk of dosing errors, as most patients cannot reliably calculate the necessary dosage adjustments.”
To curb the circulation of the substandard product, NAFDAC has directed its zonal directors and state coordinators to conduct surveillance and remove the falsified insulin syringes from the market.
The agency also urged importers, distributors, retailers, healthcare professionals, and caregivers to remain vigilant and prevent the sale of the illegal product.
