NANS Convention: South-West Students Reveal Consensus Candidates

Ahead of the 2023 Convention of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), students in the South-West have revealed names of consensus candidates from the region.

The students under the leadership of NANS Zone D which comprise of Lagos, Osun, Ogun, Ekiti, Ondo and Oyo named Comrade Babatunde Akinteye and Uthman Oladimeji as consensus Candidates for the post of Senate Clerk and Senate President respectively from the Zone.

This was disclosed in statement jointly signed by NANS Zone D Coordinator, Comrade Alao John, Secretary General, Comrade Sulaimon Sanni and Public Relations Officer, Comrade Oluwadamilola Bamigboye respectively, a copy of which made available to OSUN DEFENDER.

The students leaders noted that they arrived at the decision as a result of the candidates outstanding contributions to the advancement and unity of the students struggle in the South-West.

The statement reads: “Distinguished Nigerian students, indefatigable stakeholders of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), ladies and gentlemen of the press, and fellow patriotic Nigerians, I greet you warmly.

“It is public knowledge that Southwest has always stood for excellent and impeccable values that would enhance tertiary education in Nigeria.

“The leadership of the NANS South West and the JCC Chairmen, an extraordinary display of unity and commitment to the progress and cohesion of the Southwest zone, the zonal executives, and the Joint Campus Council (JCC) Chairmen of five states in the Southwestern region have unanimously resolved to throw our weight behind Akinteye Babatunde for the position of NANS Senate President and Oladimeji Uthman for the position of NANS Senate Clerk.

“This decision comes as a result of their outstanding contributions to the advancement and unity of the Southwest zone.

“Akinteye Babatunde and Oladimeji Uthman has done tremendously well for the progress and unity of our zone.Their dedication, sacrifice of time, and resources for the betterment of our region have not gone unnoticed. We firmly believe that their leadership is pivotal to the continued growth of the Nigerian Students’ community.

“The resolve to support Akinteye Babatunde and Oladimeji Uthman stems from the recognition that the interest of Nigerian Students transcends individual ambitions. The unity that the Southwest zone has enjoyed is invaluable, and the zonal executives and JCC Chairmen are resolute in our commitment to safeguarding this unity against any divisive interests.

“We have no alternative, regardless of how people feel, than to support Akinteye Babatunde and Oladimeji Uthman Together, we can achieve nothing but success. We urge all stakeholders to join us in this collective effort to elevate the Nigerian Students’ movement,” we emphasized.

“We the Southwest zonal executives and JCC Chairmen also taking this opportunity to express our gratitude to Hon. Seyi Tinubu for his unwavering support and contributions to the growth of the student constituency.

“We acknowledged his efforts in providing the attention the student body has always desired and we expressed pride in being associated with him, most importantly, for standing with the zone interest.

“Furthermore, the Southwest zonal executives and JCC Chairmen are calling on the Southwest Governors to empower student leaders in their respective states.

“There is a need for recognition of student leaders who have actively participated in student unionism and have progressed to serve NANS. Additionally, we urged the governors to pay attention to students with special needs and we are announcing that a list containing the names of these students would be sent out soon. We implored the governors to address the needs of these students and ensure their well-being.

“The zonal executives and JCC Chairmen are reiterating our unwavering commitment to the progress and unity of the Southwest zone and called on all stakeholders to support Akinteye Babatunde for NANS Senate President and Oladimeji Uthman for Senate Clark.

“In conclusion, we appreciate everyone who has joined and shown their support for the zone’s interest. It’s imperative to call on other aspirants who want our support as a zone to relate with Akinteye Babatunde and Oladimeji Uthman, we so much believe in any agenda he pushes, and we will strongly oppose anyone who does otherwise.

“Together, we believe we can achieve greater heights for the Nigerian Students’ community. Thanks.”
