The leadership of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) South West Zone has urged Osun State government to urgently look into the affairs of University of Ilesa over the alleged exploitation of students by the institution.

According to NANS, students have been made to pay N25,000 for entrepreneurial training programme that have been delivered,  describing it as failure of responsibility.

Also, NANS alleged that students are compelled to pay N5,000 per session for a university portal that remains largely ineffective and unreliable.

This was contained in a statement by NANS Zone D Coordinator, Comrade Josiah Adeyemo on Thursday.

“The continued suppression of the Student Union Government has silenced the collective voice of students, leaving them defenseless against administrative excesses. A functioning union would have served as a mechanism for dialogue and protection, but its deliberate absence exposes students to unchecked oppression.

“Equally troubling is the pattern of financial exploitation masked as administrative policy. Students are compelled to pay ₦5,000 per session for a university portal that remains largely ineffective and unreliable. The institution’s ICT infrastructure, including Wi-Fi services, is grossly inadequate, despite these imposed charges.

“Furthermore, students have been made to pay ₦25,000 for entrepreneurial training programs that have not been delivered. This is a blatant failure of responsibility and raises serious concerns about transparency and the management of student funds.

“The presence of armed security personnel within the academic environment has created an atmosphere of fear and intimidation, fundamentally incompatible with learning and intellectual freedom. The unjustified increment of school fees without any corresponding improvement in infrastructure or student welfare further compounds the hardship faced by students.

“NANS Southwest views these actions as a gross abuse of power and a direct attack on the rights and welfare of Nigerian students. We state without hesitation that the continued intimidation, suppression, and exploitation of students will be firmly resisted,” the statement added.
