NASA Raises Impact Probability Of Asteroid 2024 YR4 To 3.1%
NASA has raised the estimated probability of asteroid 2024 YR4 colliding with Earth in 2032 to 3.1%, up from the previously calculated 2.6%.
The revision follows new observational data gathered by astronomers tracking the asteroid’s trajectory.
Measuring approximately 177 feet (54 metres) in diameter, the asteroid could release energy equivalent to 500 Hiroshima bombs if it strikes Earth.
Scientists warn that such an impact would cause significant devastation, particularly if it occurs in a densely populated area.
However, they also note that further observations could refine its path and potentially rule out the risk of collision.

NASA’s Planetary Defense Coordination Office is closely monitoring 2024 YR4, alongside other near-Earth objects, as part of its ongoing efforts to detect and mitigate potential threats.
Scientists use telescopes worldwide to track its movement and refine impact predictions.
The agency reassures the public that asteroid impact risks are often downgraded as more data becomes available.
While the latest assessment increases concern, experts highlight that a 3.1% probability still means a 96.9% chance the asteroid will miss Earth.
Nevertheless, planetary defence teams remain on high alert, prepared to adjust mitigation strategies if necessary.
