Navy Seizes 213 Bags Of Smuggled Foreign Rice In Lagos
The Nigerian Navy has intercepted six vehicles loaded with smuggled foreign rice along the Epe-Ijebu-Ode Expressway, Lagos State.
Executive Officer of the Naval Base, Commander Chukwudi Atuba, disclosed that the operation carried out on January 22, was based on intelligence reports about the movement of illicit goods.
“In executing our statutory responsibilities, the Naval Base Epe intercepted six vehicles laden with smuggled foreign rice. On sighting our team, the suspects abandoned their vehicles and fled into the bush, leaving behind the contraband,” he stated.
The 213 bags of seized rice were handed over by Navy Lieutenant A.S. Bello to Deputy Comptroller Odoemenah of the Nigerian Customs Service, representing Comptroller Olajide of the Federal Operations Unit, Zone A, Ikeja.
“To foster inter-agency cooperation, we are officially handing over the seized bags of rice to the Nigerian Customs Service for further necessary action,” Atuba added.
He reaffirmed the Navy’s commitment to eliminating illegal activities within its jurisdiction, in line with the mission of Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ikechukwu Ogalla.
“The Nigerian Navy remains resolute and determined to rid the environment of all illegalities,” he stated.
Atuba also warned smugglers and other criminal elements, particularly those operating along the Epe-Ijebu-Ode axis, to desist from illicit activities as the Navy maintains strict surveillance in the area.
“Smugglers should understand that these activities will not benefit them. The Nigerian Navy is determined to rid the maritime environment and other areas under its jurisdiction of illegality,” he reiterated.
