NDLEA Arrests Ex-Lagos Councillor Over Alleged Possession of 40kg Cannabis
Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency have arrested a former councillor in the Orimedu area of Ibeju-Lekki Local Government Area of Lagos State, Sheleru Sadiq, over alleged possession of illicit drugs.
The arrest was disclosed by the agency’s spokesperson, Femi Babafemi, who said Sadiq was apprehended on March 2 at his residence.
Babafemi, in a statement issued on Sunday, said operatives discovered 40 kilograms of skunk, a strain of cannabis, in one of the rooms in the house.
He added that Sadiq currently works as a legislative aide.
“In his statement, Sheleru admitted ownership of the exhibit and the property where it was recovered,” Babafemi said.
“He said he had previously served two terms as a councillor representing Orimedu community in Ibeju-Lekki Local Government Council.”
Babafemi also disclosed that NDLEA operatives arrested a 32-year-old businessman, Emeka Hyginus Okwor, over alleged possession of 1,000 pills of tapentadol 250mg concealed inside baby diapers.
According to him, Okwor confessed that he was transporting the drugs to Guduwa village in Gurara Local Government Area of Niger State, where he operates a provision store.
In another operation, NDLEA operatives arrested a 36-year-old Cameroonian, Mey Ali Muhamat, with a consignment of Colorado along the Kabba/Obajana highway in Kogi State.
Babafemi further revealed that operatives on patrol along the Mokwa-Jebba road in Niger State intercepted a commercial bus travelling from Ibadan with 500 pieces of improvised explosive device components concealed inside a white sack meant for delivery to a recipient in Pelegi.
He said a follow-up operation led to the arrest of the suspected recipient, Osama Abdullahi, 21, at Pelegi in Mashegu Local Government Area of the state.
In Yola, NDLEA operatives also recovered no fewer than 122,000 pills of tramadol and 700 grams of methamphetamine hidden in the false bottom of a truck marked ENU 645XX, conveying 2,000 cartons of local drinks.
Babafemi added that another suspect, Muhammed Ali, 20, was arrested at Gadar Tamburawa in Kano with 11,283 pills of tramadol.
He said operatives in Ogun State also carried out a raid in Ogere, where two suspects, Nazifi Mudansir and Kabiru Musa, were arrested with 46 kilograms of skunk.
